Monea Limited is a company that specialises in sustainable aquaculture and fisheries as strategies to generate income and nutrition for individuals and communities across the world. The company is based in Stirling, UK but also includes activities at a small farm in Monea, Co. Fermanagh. The main project at this farm is to plant hardwood trees on around two-thirds of the farm to enhance biodiversity and sequester carbon. The principal consultant, Dr Malcolm Dickson carried out long-term assignments in Bangladesh and Egypt with WorldFish as well as Zambia and Malawi earlier in his career and has worked in many other African and Asian countries as a short-term consultant.
Malcolm has worked in development projects, the commercial sector, in publishing and as a scientist focused on aquaculture and small-scale fisheries. After leaving WorldFish in mid-2019 he has carried out consultancies for FAO, EBRD, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the World Bank. He started developing a project proposal to investigate whether protein derived from fodder material such as grass and clover can be used in aquaculture feeds. Although this project is currently on hold it is something that he hopes to return to in the near future.
